There are many important factors to consider when purchasing a mouthguard, so before you go and purchase any random mouth guard think about the purchase and the mouth guard is doing, It’s protecting your teeth and jaw!

After considering many different types of mouthguards, I’ve decided to recommend the OPRO Power-Fit Mouthguard it provides similar protection to custom fit mouthguards at a bargain price. Considering how expensive dental bills are, with the perfect balance between price and affordability you cannot go wrong with this mouthguard.

However, if you’re on a budget the shock Doctor Pro Mouth Guard is a fantastic option for a great price. Shock Doctor is known for its mouthguards and this is the perfect price between price and protection.

The most important thing you should remember from this article is not to spend money on cheap mouth guards.

You might think your saving money by spending $10 on a mouth guard but think of the thousands of dollars you could spend on dentist bills!

Out of ANYTHING you buy for Muay Thai do not go cheap with your mouthguard. The potential dentist bills are not worth it, and your wallet will thank you.

Why Wear A Mouthguard?

Together with glovesshin guards, and a groin guard(links to my gear recommendations) you must wear a mouthguard when sparring, there are numerous reasons to wear a mouthguard.

To Protect Your Mouth

Your teeth can be knocked out in many ways, like an uppercut hitting the bottom jaw causing both sets of teeth to clash which can cause a chip or a tooth break.

Having a mouthguard absorbs this impact and protects the teeth from breaking. A mouthguard protects the teeth, and also the lips and gums.

Reduces The Risk Of Concussion

There have been certain studies such as this one that suggest mouth guards reduce the risk of concussion and spinal injuries, but the finding have not been concrete.

Although why not do the sensible thing and have that extra protection? You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by wearing a mouthguard.

It Helps Stabilise The Jaw

Ideally, you want to take a punch by biting down on the mouthguard to stabilize the jaws. This reduces the risk of sprains and jaw fractures from hook or uppercut. Always bite down on your guard!

Different Types Of Mouthguards

There are three different kinds of mouthguards you can get.

  • Ready-made mouthguards. These are the cheapest and can be found in most sporting goods stores, but they won’t protect you well or even fit comfortably.
  • Boil and bite guards. These are better than stock guards and will fit very well and you boil the guard in water and offer good protection
  • Custom-fit mouthguards. The best mouthguard you can get, as it’s made from a mold of your teeth. They are super comfortable and even allow you to talk without feeling like your getting choked. They are more expensive but the OPRO Pro mentioned above will work just as good.

What To Look For When Buying A Mouthguard

Protection,Fit & Comfort.

Make sure you buy a mouth guard that fits your own unique teeth placement, I do not recommend buying a stock mouthguard at all, buy at least a boil mouth guard and make sure you give it enough time to fit your mouth.

It is super important a mouth guard doesn’t fall out when you are hit, this is why a custom mouth guard or OPRO is ideal as they are custom fit for your teeth for maximum protection and comfort.

Design & Look

If you order a custom mouth guard you can get your name or a complete custom design for a unique mouthguard experience or choose between the 43 different colors for the OPRO to really stand out in sparring and get all your teammates jealous of your cool mouthguard!.

For custom mouth guards the more design you want the more you pay, but since mouth guards last for around 3-5 years when properly cared for the design can be an important factor.

Size

Different mouthguards will have different sizes if you have a bigger one it will protect against punches better but won’t be as comfortable to wear.

Your breathing can also change when you have a mouth guard, for my bite and boil guard I never wear it in between Sparring rounds because it’s not comfortable. If being comfortable is important to you, stick to the OPRO or custom mouth guards.
